The last Catar for Tirvia
On a hill at the gates of La Vall Farrera rises the village of Tírvia, crossing of old ways and passage of the Last Cathar, Guillem de Belibaste. Pallares is a border land that, over the centuries, people have seen passing through mountain ports, often through trade relations with neighboring counties, but also to avoid persecution.
During the Cathar era, it was no less and Tírvia was one of the villages highlighted by historical events starring William of Belibasta, known as the last Cathar or the last heretic, according to the title of the written novel. by Jesús Ávila, great scholar of the subject with whom we have had the pleasure of talking.
To speak of catharism is to speak of mystery, of riddle, of secrecy … It is well known that the story that has come to us, in general, has been written according to the vision of the classes established in power and almost never according to life or the story of the fugitives and when they tell us they almost seem more fiction than real and this is one of the main attractions of catharism that no matter how hard we try to investigate, we will always remain in doubt of what is real and what is fiction, opening a great debate that will lead us to look for evidence in the field.
On this tour of Tírvia, we invite you to discover the exciting history of Guillem de Bélibaste, which will take us to the Middle Ages, and to visit some evidence of Cathar symbolism, testimony to the existence or passage of catharism in our region, a philosophy that she is still alive. We will also take the opportunity to tell you about some of the recent history of Tírvia, a site in the Democratic Memorial Space Network, as well as sharing some anecdotes and stories about this crossroads and its bucolic environment, from the past to the present. to the present.
This visit can be combined with any other in La Vall Farrera or La Vall de Cardós, as well as to enjoy the lodging and gastronomy of these valleys.
We look forward to seeing you!
