Port de Cabús. Route 05 of Pursued and Saved by El Valle de Tor

We will know the history of Route 5, of Persecuted and Saved, through the Port of Cabús, in 4×4.

During the years of World War II (1939-1944) thousands of Jews crossed the Pyrenees fleeing the persecution to which they were subjected to Nazi-occupied Europe. The Holocaust affected six million European Jews. Many of those who managed to flee, originating from Germany, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium or France, crossed the mountain slopes of the Lleida Pyrenees in epic evasions, defying surveillance on both sides of the border, the weather, perpetual snow and the hardness of the route. Their goal was to seek refuge away from Europe. Until 1943 the evacuees were basically refugee families in France escaping from the persecution initiated by the Vichy government.

The “Persecuted and Saved” project highlights the values of cross-border spaces and paths as cultural and memorial itineraries with the aim of disseminating their role as flight places for those persecuted during the Second World War. At the same time, it extols the values of aid and solidarity that the residents of this territory expressed towards the refugees.

Thus,  which bordthe present itinerary of Persecuted and Saved will take us through El Valle de Tor, to the Port de Cabús,ers Andorra, comfortably by 4×4 vehicle. The Tor Valley, geographically, is part of the Vall Farrera, and as such is also included within the Natural Park of the Upper Pyrenees.

We will leave Sort at 10 a.m. and we will move by 4×4 vehicle in La Vall Farrera so that when we arrive in Alins, we will climb the narrow road towards El Valle de Tor that later will become a track. Upon reaching Tor we will make a brief stop to confirm the food, if applicable, and continue until after the Port, discovering the various attractions that we will find along the way.

This route has the peculiarity that it is the only one of Perseguidos y Salvados in that you can get to the top of the port with a 4×4 vehicle, and therefore the most accessible.

To complete the experience, we recommend visiting other places and spaces in Vall Farrera, which we will be happy to inform you about, as well as visiting the “Camino de la Libertad” Prison-Museum in Sort.
