The favorite landscapes of La Vall de Cardós, the Boavi Plan and the Port Lakes

The Vall de Cardós, the valley in the middle of the Pallars Sobirà, is covered to the east by the Vall Farrera and to the west by Les Valls d’Àneu and backbone by the river Noguera de Cardós.

And of this valley we can say that it does not communicate by any track with the neighboring valleys and that it is accessed by the so-called “Forat de Cardós”, a place where the mountains narrow to open later in valleys dotted with charming villages and a world of possibilities, among which stand out their cultural legacy, such as Romanesque bridges, Romanesque and Baroque churches, the route of Ermengol Amill de Bonestarre …; agri-food products (Ainet sausages and yoghurts and Tavascán trout); the mythological Pla de Nequa and the legends of Encantades; the ski resort of Tavascán; the largest lake in the Pyrenees (the Certascán); and the 2 landscapes that we suggest you discover placidly, the mythical Pla de Boavi and the Port lakes, also the setting for “What happened in Cardós”, the successful novel by Ramon Solsona, inspired by a reality that marked the valley, the construction of hydroelectric plants. The Pla de Boavi and the Estanys del Port are also part of the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, like most of the territory of La Vall de Cardós and are witness to one of the most important water reserves in the Pyrenees, the head of La Vall de Cardós.

Therefore, we suggest you discover La Vall de Cardós through 2 half-day excursions that we recommend in the morning:

1-To go to Pla de Boavi, we will leave Sort, and we will be discovering the towns and valleys until Tavascán, the last town of the valley from where we will continue straight until leaving the road and following by track, in vehicle 4×4, to the dam of Montalto, where we will continue on foot, through the bucolic plain, discovering its fauna and flora and following its playful river. We will return by the same path to Sort, for lunch time.

2-To go to the Port Lakes, we will follow the same plans to Tavascán and there we will take a different route, we will follow by the access to the ski resort of Tavascán until the Bordes de Cuanca to later follow by a track, accessible only by 4×4, to the Font de la Costa, from where we will start the route on foot, with quite a slope at the beginning, to the lakes from where we will see the Port of Tavascán very close, a natural and historical space awesome. We will return by the same path to the Font de la Costa and from there to Sort. The walking route to the lakes and back is classified as moderate.

We recommend that you deepen your knowledge of the valley by visiting the Tavascán underground hydroelectric power station, the Butterfly Museum of Catalonia, in Ribera de Cardós, or a visit to the Ribera church that we offer you separately.
